Milan to Geneva by Car: Two Routes Through the Alps

Geneva is the home of international organisations, private banks and luxury watchmaking, and a frequent destination for travellers from Milan. There is no fast direct train between the two cities comparable to the Milan to Zurich line, which is one reason many people choose to drive. The road trip takes about four hours and crosses the Alps by one of two very different routes. Here is how they compare.

How long it takes

On an ordinary weekday, Google Maps gives about 320 km and close to four hours from central Milan to Geneva, and around 3 h 45 from Malpensa, which is already on the right side of the city. Real times depend on the route chosen, the border crossings and the traffic around the tunnels and passes.

Route one: Aosta Valley and the Mont Blanc tunnel

The first route follows the A4 and A5 motorways west to the Aosta Valley, passes Courmayeur and goes through the Mont Blanc tunnel into France, then continues past Chamonix to Geneva. It is mostly motorway, with spectacular views of Mont Blanc. The tunnel is a toll road, and on busy days there can be waiting times at the entrance. This route is also convenient if you want to stop in Courmayeur or Chamonix on the way.

Route two: the Simplon and Lake Geneva

The second route runs from Malpensa past Lake Maggiore to Domodossola, crosses the Simplon Pass into Switzerland, descends to Brig and follows the Rhône valley past Sion and Martigny to Lake Geneva, then along the lake via Montreux and Lausanne to Geneva. It is a beautiful drive, particularly the last part along the lake, and it stays in Switzerland after the border. It is a natural choice if you want to combine Geneva with Verbier, Crans-Montana or Zermatt.

Which route to choose

Your driver chooses the route on the day based on traffic, roadworks and weather. The Mont Blanc tunnel route is often the fastest when traffic is normal. The Simplon route can be better when there are queues at the tunnel or when you want to stop in the Valais. In winter, both routes are kept open, but snow can slow them, and our drivers check conditions before departure.

Borders and documents

Both routes cross international borders: the Mont Blanc route enters France and then Switzerland, while the Simplon route enters Switzerland directly. Schengen rules mean that systematic passport checks are unusual, but you need a valid passport or identity card, and non-EU visitors should keep their passport at hand. Our vehicles carry the Swiss motorway vignette.

Business trips to Geneva

For business travellers, the car turns a four-hour journey into working time. A common plan is an early departure from Milan, meetings in Geneva in the afternoon and a flight home from Geneva airport, where the car drops you before returning to Milan. Alternatively, an overnight stay allows a second day of meetings and a return drive the following afternoon.

Combining with the mountains

Geneva sits at the edge of some of the best mountain destinations in Europe. Chamonix is about an hour from the city. Verbier and Crans-Montana are on the Simplon route. A chauffeured trip can combine a few days in the mountains with meetings or a stay in Geneva without the need to return a rental car across a border.

Choosing the vehicle

For one to three passengers, the Mercedes E-Class or S-Class are comfortable on the long drive. Families and groups choose the V-Class, with up to seven seats, or the Sprinter Luxury VIP for up to eight. Prices are fixed in writing before you travel and include fuel, tolls and the Swiss vignette.

Returning to Milan

For the return, the same two routes apply. If you are flying out of Milan, tell us your flight time and we will plan the departure from Geneva with a comfortable margin, choosing the route with the least traffic on the day.
