Milan to Lucerne by Private Car

Through the Gotthard to the lake

Lucerne is about 245 km from Milan, almost all of it motorway: north past Lugano and Bellinzona, through the Gotthard road tunnel, then down the Reuss valley to the lake. On summer weekends and at Easter the tunnel can queue for an hour or more, so on those dates we plan the departure accordingly or suggest the pass road when it is open. If you want to stop on the way, Lugano or Andermatt make easy breaks. In August and September the Lucerne Festival fills the town and the lakefront hotels. We drive to the Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern, the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern and the Hotel National Luzern. Bürgenstock is twenty minutes further and can share the same booking. The S-Class suits two; families and small groups travel in the V-Class.
